| World Champion Rides Away
The 92nd edition of the Giro di Lombardia runs from Varese to the northern Italian town of Bergamo. It is the same race course used since 1995 with minor changes and additions. This year the organizers added the Colle Aperto, which is only 4 kms from the finish in Bergamo.
Swiss Oscar Camenzine came to Varese after winning the World Championship Road Race one week earlier. Camenzine beat Michael Boogerd and Michelle Bartoli to earn the Rainbow Jersey. All were present for the Giro di Lombardia and very keen on taking the “Race of the Falling Leaves" victory.
The peloton rode together over the summit of the Forcella di Burra. Camenzine and Boogerd attack and separated on the descent into Bergano. After hesitating Bartoli and Pascal Richard reacted but it was too late. Camenzine and Boogerd rode into Bergamo with over a one minute lead.
Oscar Camenzine powered away from a tiring Boogerd and rode to the prestigious Giro di Lombardia victory.
